Anmitsu is Japanese confectionery, which consists of boiled red peas, agar gelatin cubes, gyuhi (rice cake), mandarin oranges covered with sweet bean paste and brown sugar syrup.

You can enjoy variety of tastes and textures.

Agar gelatin is made of Gelidiaceae and has the texture of jelly and no calories.

So anmitsu is popular and seen as a healthy sweet if you don’t put on too much sweet bean paste or syrup.

The origin of anmitsu is "Mitsumame" in the Meiji era. Mitsumame is a simpler sweet made with agar gelatin and boiled red peas covered with white or brown sugar syrup.

And "an", with the sweet bean paste is added, is called "anmitsu".

It is said that one old Japanese-style confection store created anmitsu in the early Showa era.
