[Fun! Japan Reporter] Jelly Is Not Jelly

Reporterd by T.mo.T

Today I’m going to introduce you to another old Japanese Restaurant in Kota Kinabalu, the Nishiki Japanese Restaurant. It was founded in 1987 and located in the Central Business District (CBD) of Kota Kinabalu. It is about two blocks away from another old Japanese Restaurant, the Nagasaki Japanese Restaurant.
Nishiki Japanese Restaurant is located at the same block with Hotel Sixty3 which make it very convenient to those from outstation. There are a few other hotels at the surrounding area. The Sabah Tourism Board Building is right across the road making the restaurant easily accessible by tourists. If you are driving, parking is not an issue since there is a car park building next to this restaurant. If you are lucky, you can park at the designated parking spaces along the roads around the area, mostly in front of the shops or buildings.

The restaurant’s interior concept is just like a typical food restaurant. Not much of Japanese furniture or decorations, but it is quite spacious. When we arrived at the restaurant around 12.30 PM for lunch, it was quite empty, only two tables occupied. But by 1.00 PM, while we were preoccupied going through the menu, we were quite surprised when we look around, almost all the tables are occupied with customers such as family with school children and office workers.
Menu selections are quite wide. One of their Catch of the Day menu is sashimi. The waitress inform us that today they are using local fish for the sashimi. True as advertised, ‘Catch of the Day’, but we skipped that menu for this time.

Instead, we ordered the Ultimate Pork on Rice lunch set which came with tender braised pork belly, thickly slice Japanese char siu pork, soft boiled egg and of course the rice. The gravy is not much on the rice but very tasty. I like taking meat, and I would say this is quite special meat menu. The mixture between the braised pork belly and the sliced Japanese char siu pork makes their taste special.

We also ordered another lunch special which came with catch of the day, ebi, ebiko, tekka, maki and tamago yaki. The set is just a regular where you can find it in any other Japanese restaurant. We ordered this to fill up our hungry stomach.

We added another lunch set special into our menu for us to dig in. We wanted something different so we ordered the Shake Teriyaki Lunch. The set came with grilled salmon with teriyaki sauce and winter melon with minced chicken. The winter melon is quite interesting. When the set arrived on our table, I thought the winter melon was some kind of jelly. It really looks like jelly inside the bowl.

Only after I took a scoop of it that I’m convinced it is indeed winter melon. I would say this was the best dish of our lunch. I really like the winter melon, the taste of it and the looks of it too. The prices of the menu are not at the high side and we feel that our bill is very reasonable.
