Lee’s Souvenir Ideas – Nambu Tekki

en13

Recently, I’ve taken an interest in what’s made in the Northeast.

One item that I think would make a great present is Nambu Tekki (南部鉄器)!

This is metal ware made by a group of producers who join the Nambu Tekki Association.

Although the number of people producing Nambu Tekki fell dramatically after World War II, today, new products are being developed and exports to Europe are on the rise.

Historically, Nambu Tekki was made as teapots.
These teapots were heavy and always black in colour.
One may say, a little bit bland…
However, now, a colour revolution is now under way!
New colours are being developed, and you will find teapots in colours such as yellow, red, white, light green and pastel blue.
The decorations on the teapot are becoming more and more appealing too!

Other than being used as teapots, you’ll find many new products using the metal technology of the region.
In summer, you’ll want to check out furin (風鈴 = wind bells) for their lovely cooling sounds.
If you’re looking for something quieter, check out saucers for teacups made in the Nambu Tekki style!
