In Tokyo, There are cat cafes, owl cafes, reptile cafes, and so on and so forth. This time I will introduce you to a Harinezumi Cafe or a Hedgehog Cafe, one of the many interesting places in Roppongi where you can play with the cute spiny animal with its adorable face.

Hedgehog Cafe is located close to Roppongi Station. Just a few minutes’ walk will take you to the cafe and there you see the cute little hedgehogs. The cafe is very popular among locals as well as foreign tourists. Since it is very popular, I recommend that you book a slot in advance on the Internet, or you might have to wait in line if you just get there.

Upon arrival, I was seated shortly because I had a reservation. The cafe looks cute with a hedgehog picture displayed on a bright signage by the staircase. There is also a rabbit cafe on the third floor of the same building but this time I went to the second floor just as I was eager to meet the hedgehogs.

The staff soon welcomed me and there were already many customers who were mostly women and young couples, playing with the hedgehogs. They were put in a large aquarium enough to accommodate 3~4 hedgehogs in it. The customers can choose and pick up your favorite color of the hedgehog to play with and it will be put in a small box so that you can interact with it later on. I chose a medium-sized hedgehog with dark brown spines. Such an adorable figure, isn’t it?

Before interacting with a hedgehog, you will be asked to disinfect your hands for the sake of their health. The picture shows you how to hold a hedgehog: First, put your hands together and make a scoop as if you were holding water in your hands. Second, embrace the hedgehog with your hands because hedgehogs love the warmth and narrow places. Third, gently stroke the hedgehog’s belly. The hedgehogs loves it so much!

Hedgehogs are omnivorous animal. Hedgehogs in the wild eat insects, fruits, plants, and mushrooms. However, domesticated hedgehogs usually are fed with commercially available food in the form of a tablet that contains necessary nutrients for their health. The cafe also sells hedgehogs to the customers to pet them at home. The hedgehogs usually sleep in the morning until noon, and in the afternoon after they wake up, it is time to prepare for dinner. And after they eat, they like to play on the spinning wheel and in the morning, they go back to rest.

The cafe does not provide meals for the customers, drinks are available as a self-service though, or you can bring your own food and drink (except alcohol). The fee is 1000 yen + tax / 30 min for weekdays and 1300 yen + tax / 30 min for Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
