5 Souvenirs of Hokkaido
The northmost island of Hokkaido has become a very popular tourist spot in recent years. Sweets and food of Hokkaido are also very popular and Hokkaido food fairs are held many places in Japan. I live in Hokkaido and have many friends from outside of Hokkaido. There are some very standard souvenirs of Hokkaido which many people love. I would like to introduce those standard souvenirs from Hokkaido.
Shiroi Koibito (Ishiya)
Shiroi Koibito made by Isiya is one of most selling souvenir in Japan. If people find the package of Shiroi Koibito, they will know that someone went to Hokkaido. Shiroi Koibito means “white lovers” and white means snow in a figurative sense. It is a biscuit sandwiching a white chocolate. Shiroi Koibito is very long-seller and is sold since 1976 and still many people love it. The wheat for cookies is 100% Hokkaido wheat. Shiroi Koibito is also popular souvenir for visitor from overseas. The ingredients of the cookies are also written in English at the package. So the people who get it for souvenir can eat without worry.
If you have a chance, I recommend you to visit Shiroi Koibito Park in Sapporo. It is an amusement park and souvenir shop added to the factory. There are many kinds of sweets at the shop. They have consideration for visitors from overseas and have a prayer room for Muslims
Marusei Butter Sand (Rokkatei)
Marusei Butter Sand is very popular sweets and most Japanese know it. “Marusei” was a name of butter producer and the butter of made from 100% Hokkaido milk. The snack is a cookie sandwiching with raison butter cream. But you can get it only in Hokkaido.
Rokkatei is one of best known sweets shop in Hokkaido. The shop is originally from Obihiro which is in eastern Hokkaido. Now they also have shops in some sightseeing area like Sapporo, Asahikawa, Hakodate and Furano. You can also buy them at airport and some other suvenior shops. But if you have a chance, I recommend you to visit Rokkatei shop. The shop is very nice and beautiful. Some Rokkatei shops have café and you can eat cakes and sweets. Marusei Butter Sand is not only one famous product but they have many other kinds like chocolate and caramel candies. The packages of Rokkatei with flowers are famous and cute, so they also sell stationary goods of it.
Nama Chocolate (Royce)
Nama Chocolate of Royce is also standard and popular souvenir in Hokkaido. It is chocolate and creams with melts very smooth in your mouth. Nama Chocolate was selected as the best souvenir in Japan on a TV show. There are chocolate with rliwuor and also without liquor. You can chose from many kinds of Nama Chocolate like bitter, flavor of Matcha, white chocolate, mild milk, and so on. Since it is very delicate to change of temperature, I recommend you to get the chocolate at airport when you leave from Hokkaido. Royce has many other chocolate products but I also recommend “Potatochip Chocolate”.
Jaga-pockle (Calbee)
Jaga-pockle is fried potato snacks all made from potatoes of Hokkaido. Potato of Hokkaido is very famous because it is very sweet. Potato chips are usually made from mashed potato but potatoes for Jaga-pockle is not mashed and cut with skin. So you can recognize original taste of potato. Calbee is one of the most famous potato chips’ manufactures and their potato chips are sold everywhere in Japan. But Jaga-pokle is only sold in Hokkaido, because the quality of material potatoes are high and the amount their supply is limited.
Sanporoku (Ryugetsu)
Sanporoku is baumkuchen with chocolate. It looks like white birch which is famous tree in Hokkaido. Most ingredients for Sanporoku such as wheat, butter, and eggs are products of Hokkaido. There is a litlle size Sanporoku and it is good for souvenir to give away many peopole. Sanporoku is product of confectionery maker Ryugetsu. Ryugetsu is one of most famous confectionery makers in Hokkaido.
You can buy all souvenirs listed on this article at New-Chitose Airport which is largest airport in Hokkaido. You can also buy them at many other souvenir shops in Hokkaido.
