After living in Japan for two years, I have managed to accumulate an impressive amount of clothing items. Last January, when I was doing some spring cleaning, I packed up a bag of clothes that no longer fit me well nor was in fashion, and headed off to Mode-off, a secondhand clothing chain store in Japan. Selling your clothes in Mode-Off is a good option, as it is a convenient way to clean your wardrobe while earning some extra money. I will preface by saying that you should not expect to earn too much from Mode- Off, as after all, it does buy and sell clothes for a very cheap price.

Once you enter into a Mode-Off, ask for the counter whereby they evaluate your clothes. An attendant will be at hand to collect your bag of clothes, and will hand you a number and expected waiting time. This time is dependent on the number of people before you and the amount of items they are trying to sell, as the attendant will evaluate every piece of item and put them into appropriate boxes with price tags on them.

After your clothes have been evaluated, you will be called back and a brief explanation will be given. Prices for the clothes ranges from 300 Yen to 10 Yen. If you agree to the pricing system, an official invoice will be given, and a proof of identity will be asked for. Unfortunately for me, most of my clothing items ended up in the 10 Yen bin. I felt that the price was not quite fair and hence told the attendant that I would like to stop the sale. I did, however, let go of 2 pairs of jeans for 100 Yen each, which was okay given the learning experience.

If you have some old items you want to get rid off, and are tight on cash, Mode- Off is the place to go. Don't expect to get rich from it though!
