Whether you visit in the day time or in the evening, Eikando Temple is a beautiful and serene temple to visit in Kyoto. Also known as one of the most beautiful autumn night views in Kyoto, Eikando Temple is the perfect place to wrap up a day of adventuring and sightseeing in Kyoto.
About Eikando Zenrinji Temple
Officially known as the Shojuraigousan Muryojuin Zenrin-ji, this temple is commonly known as Eikando after the 7th head of the temple, Yokan Risshi. It was founded in 863 and named Zenrin-ji by Emperor Seiwa.
Though it was originally part of the Shingon sect, it began to lean towards the Jodo-shu sect teachings around the time that Yokan Risshi was head of the temple, who was very devout to the teachings of Amida.
As time went by, the temple prospered and became a major training site for practitioners of the Seizan Zenrin-ji sect. Around the year 1472, the Eikando Temple was destroyed during the Onin War and it wasn’t until the beginning of the 16th century, that the temple was fully reconstructed.
These days, Eikando Temple holds many National Treasures of Japan and Important Cultural Assets. The most unique Important Cultural Asset is the statue of Mikaeri-Amida, in which the head of the statue is looking behind over the shoulder.
It is believed that this statue was made due to a vision that Yokan Risshi had in 1082, where he saw the image of Amida who began to lead Yokan. Stunned by the event, Yokan stopped and Amida looked back. It was this pose of mercy that Yokan remembered and used as a symbol to wait for those who were late in adopting the faith.
Night Illuminations
Eikando Temple is one of a handful of temples in the Kyoto area that is known for their beautiful night illuminations that are held in the late autumn seasons. Usually held during the beginning of November to the beginning of December, it is a chance to visit the grounds at night and enjoy the stunning views of Amida-do, Gasen-do, and the garden in a whole new light!
Autumn Views
With over 3,000 maple trees on the grounds of Eikando Temple, it’s no wonder that it is one of the most beautiful places to visit during the Autumn season to see the bright colors of Fall.
At Eikando Temple, this beauty is magnified at night when they open the grounds to visitors in the evening to an illuminated garden that radiates with the colors of red, yellow, and orange.
Although photography and video are not allowed in the temple grounds, it is allowed in the garden, and when the trees are lit up for this event, it makes for the perfect Instagram picture!
This is one of the most popular spots for locals and tourists to visit for night time illuminated fall foliage, so it can get pretty crowded at times, but if you come a little bit later in the evening, the crowds tend to thin out, making the experience more enjoyable!
