In Japan, July 7 is the day of the Tanabata. When the Chinese tradition was transmitted in the Heian period, it was performed as an event in palace. During Edo period, it became one of the "five festivals" wishing for the growth of children and spread among the common people.
In modern times it is said that the wish will come true if you write it on the colorful "strips(短冊)". It was originally started as a pray for progress in tuition/lessons. Each decoration during the Tanabata has its own meaning. For example, the "Thousand paper cranes(千羽鶴)" has the meaning of wish for "Family’s long life". While the "Kincyaku purse (巾着)" as wish for "The money will accumulate".
