What are the popular Japanese cuisine for foreign tourists in Japan?

The purpose to visit Japan for most of the foreign tourist is "to eat Japanese food." There are varieties of Japanese cuisine in Japan such as sushi, ramen, Yakiniku, shabu-shabu, green tea dessert. However, do you know what are the food which Japan travelers enjoy eating the most in Japan? Today we are going to introduce you some of the popular Japanese gourmet rankings based on the "Survey on foreigner consumption trends in Japan 2016" which announced by Japan Tourism Board!

The activity which I most expected to do in Japan, is “to eat Japanese Food”! 

According to the survey, the must-do activity for a foreign tourist in Japan prior to their visit is “To eat Japanese food", which achieved 71.2%, the second place "Shopping" 54.5%, and third place "To visit natural scenery or tourist attraction” 47.9%. Approximately 70% of the foreign visitors to Japan are having very high expectation for "Japanese food" and are really looking forward to it. Let’s see what kind of food they actually eat to satisfy their expectation! 

The number one most satisfying Japanese cuisine, ramen!

According to the survey result done by foreign visitors from different countries, the most satisfying food during their stay in Japan is ramen, which stood at 21.9%. The reasons of this result may largely due to the flexible dining time of ramen since a lot ramen restaurant are opened regardless of afternoon or night, limited choice of menus has allowed the customer to choose easily without making mistake even though they don’t understand Japanese. Another reason is that there is a lot famous local ramen menu throughout the country such as Sapporo Ramen, Asahikawa Ramen and Hakata Ramen. Some of them have been eating for twice or three times during their visit to Japan. In particular, Taiwan (25.2%) and Singapore (29%) are stood at the top of the ranking.

Second place is meat dishes such as shabu shabu, sukiyaki and yakiniku

Second place of the survey is meat dishes such as shabu shabu, Sukiyaki and Yakiniku, which stood at 18.8%. Wagyu beef in Japan are soft, odorless and have a melting texture that is famous and recognized worldwide. Meat dishes specialty restaurants such as shabu-shabu and yakiniku offer all-you-can-eat plan, and the standard price is around 5,000 yen per person for normal plan, and about 7,000 yen per person for all-you-can-eat Wagyu plan. A lot of foreigner tourist will think, “Since I came all the way to Japan, I need to enjoy this nice and authentic food!” and enjoy the food as their “Reward Gourmet”.

Third place is sushi, but the result varies depending on country!

The third place is sushi at 18.1%. Both Thailand (24.1%) and Vietnam (31%) have the highest percentage, while Taiwan (9.4%) and Hong Kong (15.4%) have the comparable lower percentage since they seldom expose to raw food.

There are many types of Sushi restaurant such as counter style Onigiri sushi restaurant, conveyor belt sushi, Chirashi Sushi restaurant, etc. For the budget wise, it is approximately 3,000 yen in the daytime and approximately 6,000 yen in the evening if you dine at counter style sushi restaurant, for conveyor belt sushi restaurant is cost you approximately 150 to 300yen per plate with 2 pieces of sushi. Besides, if you want a sushi which can be eaten easily, it is recommended for you to try “Seafood Bowl”, vinegar rice comes with the seafood topping such as Tuna, Salmon, Ikura (Salmon Roe), etc.
