Writing Sutras or "写経" in Japanese for my first time.
Last weekend, I went to Ue Tsuyama Hōshuin, a temple located in Kitayama, Iga City Mie Prefecture Iga City to try writing Sutras or写経 in Japanese.
That was my first experience writing Sutras by copying the letters. In my country we use the usual romanji for writing Indonesian language. So we don’t use Kanji or any special characters in common.
In Mie University, I have joined a small calligraphy class. That time I felt fun writing Kanji characters. That’s why I was looking forward to do Sutras.
Writing Kanji characters has always been challenging for me. It is not only about writing by copying the letters, but we have to pay attention to the steps of writing.
I was told that for one character, it must be started from top to bottom and from left to right. By then, we then can determine where the smooth and emphasis in writing a character.
You can enjoy "写経" without any Kanji knowledge
While writing Sutras, there were quite lot of kanji characters I had to write. The manuscript was called Sutras of the Heart Sutra or 般若心経の写経 in Japanese.
I honestly don’t understand the meaning of the words. I was told that prayers in Buddhist were written there. I believe it is a beautiful prayer. It was challenging too, because it needed patience to finish all the characters in one paper.
"写経" and your wishes
At last I wrote the date of Sutras, my name, and my wish. Because I was still not able to write my wishes in Japanese, so I wrote it in Indonesian language. I wrote, “Damailah negeriku” means “Peace be with my country”. Recently a lot of things have been happened in my country while I am in Japan. I hope all be well.
Conclusion
For me, writing Sutras was another good thing to learn Japanese culture and Buddhist culture. It was a precious experience for me.
It is quite cold recently in Japan. I felt glad looking at some grandmothers participated in writing Sutras. It was so cold, but they looked so enthusiastic.
Writing Sutras activity in this temple is being held in every third Saturday.
