Muji was founded in Japan in 1980.
Their beautiful, simple products are all created around the core concept of “affordable and good quality items.”
In Japan, the stores are known as Mujirushi Ryohin, and there are currently 385 stores around the country.
The brand is loved all around the world, and as of February 2014, there were a total of 255 international stores, including ones in Southeast and East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and America.
Naturally, Japanese people love Muji, too.
Furniture and clothes, stationery and kitchen goods, food, bicycles, houses—their product lines are so expansive that you could buy practically everything there!
Today, I’m going to be introducing some of the Muji items that are most popular with Japanese people and will also be easy to take home with you, as souvenirs or for yourself.

First up is the stationery.
Muji’s stationery is used and loved by everyone from schoolchildren to working adults.
Everything has streamlined, neat designs: simple and plain pens, aluminum mechanical pencils, and much more.
There’s a huge range of stationery available, and the prices are cheap, too, so be sure to check out their selection!

These are some of the bathroom items.
This simple, acrylic cup and refillable bottle are two of the most consistently popular products.
A lot of Japanese people tend to avoid loud designs, so items like these go down well.
The refillable bottles come in a range of different sizes, so they can be used for different things like makeup remover and shampoo.

Muji’s snacks are very popular, too!
In the photo are a baumkuchen (a type of spitcake) and cookies called “Boule de Neige.”
The baumkuchen are always very popular, and come in different flavors including banana, sweet potato, and baked apple.
The one in the photo is lemon flavored with icing on top.
The sweet icing and fresh aroma of the lemon baumkuchen go perfectly together.
The Boule de Neige—baked almond pastry balls coated with icing sugar—are always very popular, too.
The key to their delicious taste is their melt-in-the mouth texture.

Next up is this instant curry!
Curry is really popular in Japan, like it is across Southeast Asia.
Muji sell a range of different curries that are ready to eat as soon as you heat them up.
This butter chicken curry is the most popular.
It’s not too spicy, letting you savor the taste of the flavorsome tomatoes and creamy butter.
There are also lots of other varieties available, such as green curry, yellow curry, massaman curry, and chana masala.

Last of all, I’d like to talk about Muji’s stamp service.
The service lets you use the in-store stamps to print onto envelopes and other paper goods purchased in-store—although there are some stores where it’s not available.
There are lots of different stamps, such as letters and numbers, messages like “THANK YOU” and “HELLO,” and shapes like stars and hearts.
The notebook in the photo has had a Mount Fuji stamp and “JAPAN” printed on it.
Something like this would make a great journal for your travels in Japan!

There are countless different products available at Muji, so make sure to stop by and see if any strike your fancy!
