This week’s Fun Japan word is about a Japanese weather phenomenon.
Haru Ichiban (春一番) is the term used for the “spring storm” which happens usually once a year in Japan.Between mid-February and mid-March, a very strong wind will blow in Japan.
It’s said that the wind is a sign of spring arriving, that’s where it gets its name 春一番 literally meaning “first of spring”.
The day in which it occurs differs depending on the region and year.
You can read the records here: 春一番
The wind is so strong on that day that it even stops some trains, and many objects come flying, so be careful!“Haru Ichiban” is also the title of a song by a very famous Japanese girls group from the 70s called “Candies”.
If you’re lucky (or unlucky) enough, you might hear someone singing it at karaoke!
