Uminoie, which literally means homes of the sea, refers to facilities and stores that are set up around the beaches in Japan. They can be very busy during the summer season when people like to visit beaches and swim in the ocean.

Uminoies commonly provide foods such as yakisoba, ikayaki (grilled squid), oden, and sometimes even showers or a place to stay. So if you plan to visit Japan during the summer, and would love to visit the beach, definitely do some research on Uminoies around, and take advantage of their wonderful facilities, not to mention the delicious food! You know you’ll be needing that shower after you take a dip in the refreshing seawater!

In prefectures such as Niigata and Ishikawa, Uminoies are sometimes also referred to as Hamajayas(浜茶屋・はまぢゃや).

Let’s remember the following useful sentences before going to Japan!

===============================

Natsu no baito to ittara uminoie deshou!
(夏のバイトと言ったら海の家でしょう!)
> If you mention part-time jobs during the summer, nothing beats working at a uminoie!

Bi-chi ni ikuto, itsumo uminoie no tabemono tabetaku narimasu.
(ビーチに行くと、いつも海の家の食べ物食べたくなります。)
> Every time I visit the beach, I crave food from the uminoies.

===============================

Now all that’s left is to go out there and try using them in Japan!
