Uchiage is the Japanese word meaning the “completion” of a job or project. It also commonly refers to “celebration parties” or “afterparties” that are held to celebrate the successful completion.

Uchiage parties are often held by companies when they successfully launch a product, or hold an event. Uchiage parties are not limited to companies though. For example, students also hold parties to celebrate sport team competitions, school cultural festivals, or even just the end of the school year.

These parties are commonly held at restaurants or Japanese style Izakayas. These celebration parties are an important part of Japanese culture, and work to build a sense of the group and community.

Another usage of the word uchiage is “launching”, such as in the context of rockets, or fireworks.

Let’s remember the following useful sentences before going to Japan!

===============================

Purojekuto no uchiage kai wa sugoku tanoshikatta desu!
(プロジェクトの打ち上げ会はすごく楽しかったです!)
> I really enjoyed the celebration party for the project!

Roketo no uchiage mi ni ikimashou!
(ロケットの打ち上げ見に行きましょう!)
> Let’s go watch the rocket launch!

===============================

Now all that’s left is to go out there and try using them in Japan!
