Today we will learn the Japanese word for “hobbies”, shumi.

Be sure to remember this word well, as it is extremely useful when meeting new people and introducing yourself. Just like in English, talking about hobbies is a very common conversation topic when first meeting somebody.

To state your hobbies, you can say “Watashi no shumi wa...” followed by the hobby and then “desu”, which means “My hobby is blah”. Even if you say the hobby itself in English, if it’s a common word, many Japanese will still understand what you are saying.

To ask other people about their hobbies, you can say “Anata no shumi wa nandesuka?”.

Now that you know these useful sentences, don’t be afraid to make conversation with the locals when you are in Japan!

Let’s remember the following useful sentences before going to Japan!

===============================

Anata no shumi wa nandesuka?
(あなたの趣味は何ですか?)
> What are your hobbies?

Watashi no shumi wa ongaku wo kikukoto desu.
(私の趣味は音楽を聴くことです。)
> My hobby is listening to music.

===============================

Now all that’s left is to go out there and try using them in Japan!
