Nougyo (農業) Fun! Japan Words vol.144
Nougyo is the Japanese word for “agriculture”.
If you’ve ever taken the Shinkansen, or even trains in the more rural areas of Japan, you have probably seen the miles and miles of farmland. Urban cities like Tokyo, or cities rich in culture and history like Kyoto are certainly top tourist destinations. However, there are many gems in the countryside that should not be overlooked.
As a country that eats rice as a staple, much of the farmland is dedicated to growing rice. Vegetables and fruits are grown as well. For example, Hokkaido is very well known for corn.
When speaking of rice, one place that is nice to visit is Niigata prefecture. In addition to farmland, there are ski resorts, beautiful parks and historical shrines. It is famous for its delicious rice. If you are a fan of Japanese sake (rice wine), they also produce some of the best sake Japan has to offer. The annual Sakenojin Sake Fair is held in Niigata every March.
