Kashidashi(貸出)is the Japanese word meaning lending or loaning.

Dashi in Japanese has the meaning of “out”, and thus, kashidashi normally refers to renting something and taking it out from where it was originally found. This is most commonly used for renting books from a library, or videos from a video rental shop. Although there are also cases where the item you rent is not moved from its premises, such as when you rent a computer to use at a store.

Another common usage of kashidashi is a loan from a bank.

One of the most useful things to rent in Japan for visitors are Pocket WiFis. While free public WiFi can be found at some cafes such as Starbucks, it is not widely available in Japan. If you need to use the internet, at a cost of around $5 a day, you can borrow a pocket WiFi, which essentially gives you a portable 4G WiFi hotspot to take with you during your travel. Another option is data-only sim cards that you can get at many electronic stores. Don’t forget to get one on your next visit!

Let’s remember the following useful sentences before going to Japan!

===============================

●Ano toshokan no hon wa zenbu tada de kashidashi dekimasuyo.
(あの図書館の本は全部ただでかしだしできますよ。)
> The books in that library can all be borrowed for free.

●Pasakon kashidashi dekiru mise shitteimasuka?
(パソコンかしだしできる店しっていますか?)
> Do you know a store where I can borrow a computer?

===============================

Now all that’s left is to go out there and try using them in Japan!
