One of the most useful words while travelling is the word “ticket”. Let’s learn about the Japanese word for it, Kippu (切符), and find out how to use it!

Whether you will be making use of public transit, attending events, or going to museums, you will likely be purchasing tickets, so knowing how to talk about them in Japanese will be invaluable.

For example, taking public transit such as trains, you will likely encounter both one-way tickets, katamichi kippu (片道切符), and round-trip tickets, oufuku kippu (往復切符).

The English word ticket itself has also made its way into the Japanese vocabulary, albeit pronounced slightly differently. Instead of ticket, they say “Chee-kay-ttoe” (チケット). The double “tt” simply means you add a slight pause before pronouncing the “toe” part.
