Tsukemen Enaku – Yummy Tsuke-men in Kyoto

Ichijoji, located at the northern part of Kyoto, is a road that has a lot of ramen shops that serve delicious ramen. It is quite far from famous tourist attractions, and so it may be a little bit inconvenient to get there and go around. However, you can still get there multiple ways: By bus, you can take bus No. 206 from Kyoto station and get off at Takano bus stop then walk a bit; by train, you can take the Eisan line From Demachiyanagi Station and get off at Ichijoji station then walk for 2 minutes; or by bike.

Enaku specializes in tsukemen. Tsukemen is a dipping ramen where the noodles and the soup are served separately. The noodles are eaten after dipping them in the soup. Enaku’s soup base is made from dashi, which is a soup stock mainly composed of katsuo (bonito). The shop offers three flavors of soup: normal, spicy, and curry flavors. You can also choose a pair from the three flavors (half-half), which costs around 850-900 yen. The normal-spicy half-half and normal-curry half-half both cost 850 yen, while the spicy-curry half-half costs 900 yen. After choosing your soup, you can choose the amount of noodles: small for 150 grams, normal for 200 grams, or middle for 275 grams at no extra cost. If you order the small size of noodles, you can get half of a boiled egg for free! If you are really hungry, you can order a large size of 450 grams of noodles for an extra 100 yen. You can also add the toppings: boiled egg for 100 yen or meat for 200 yen.

I have tried the spicy-curry half-half. The curry soup has a strong curry flavor, which goes well with the dashi-base soup. The spicy soup, which may not be so spicy for Thai people, is a good choice, especially when you are looking for something spicy and with a kick!

Enaku’s noodles are thick, soft, and chewy. Tsukemen noodles are typically served cold, but you can choose hot noodles in the shop by saying “Atsumori o onegaishimasu”. Enaku’s soups are very thick, so the noodles will be coated with soup really well. Every bite is very yummy.
Enaku’s chashu pork is grilled as you order, so it smells super good and tastes really great.

After finishing the noodles, you can ask for wari-soup (soup for diluting). Tsukemen soup is usually thick, and so soup-wari is served so that you can drink the remaining soup.Just say “wari-soup wo onegaishimasu”, then the staff will dilute the soup for you to drink.
