The natto (なっとう or 納豆) is very popular dish in Japan.
Famously good and delicious, but the smell is not for everyone and sometimes even considered as off-putting.
Once you get past that, it is quite possible to be addicted with this healthy soy bean dish that can be served as a side or main dish.
I have long heard of a Natto vending machine in Shimokitazawa, and this weekend, I decided to pay it a little visit.
You can find the Natto vending machine in front of a Yamanashi specialty shop called Natto Kojo Sendaiya (納豆工房せんだい屋) or Sendaiya (せんだいや) for short.
Amongst the various Natto products on sale, one can choose between the size and flavors of natto, and also have their pick of sweets made from natto.
Since the shop was open when I visited, I decided to go for something more unique and selected the summer special – peach natto doughnut.
According to the shopkeeper, these doughnuts are baked, not fried, so that the taste and health benefits can be maintained.
Furthermore, all ingredients for the doughnuts are made with fresh ingredients.
Before serving the doughnuts, it is suggested that the product be heated in an oven toaster for 1-2 minutes, or warmed in a microwave oven for 10 seconds.
