Lee’s Travelog – Cycling the Shimanami Kaido #4: The Charming Town of Setod

Setoda is an idyllic port town on Ikuchi-jima Island.
The main highlights are Kosan-ji Temple, the Hirayama Ikuo Art Museum and the Shiomachi shopping street.

Kosan

-ji Temple: Located in the

centre

of Setoda, approximately ten minutes by foot from the port, this beautiful temple offers visitors a great view its buildings and garden. The temple was constructed in 1936 and is relatively newer when compared to its peers across the nation. It is dedicated to the mother of the

Kosan

, the founder who the temple is named after.

What is unique about this temple is that it uses special types of steel (unlike most which use wood) ? This is because Kosan used to be a heavyweight in the Osaka steel industry. Another impressive element of the temple grounds is the adjacent Miraishin-no-Oka. This is a landscape design using three thousand tonnes of marble to cover fifty thousand square metres.

The contrast of the blue sea and the while marble is very impressive!
Address: Setoda 553-2, Setoda-cho, Onomichi City. Hours: 9am-5pm (last entry 4:30pm). Admission: 1200 yen.

Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art: This art museum is dedicated to Hirayama Ikuo, a monumental figure in Japanese art born near Setoda.

He is famous for sketching scenes from the Silk Road and engaging in many art projects to preserve cultural artefacts from along the Silk Road.

The display is composed of three parts: 1) works from Hirayama’s childhood and student days, 2) works relating to the Silk Road, and 3) works relating to the Inland Sea and his hometown area. I found the second section the most impressive because of the works’ beauty.

Shiomachi shopping street: You could easily miss this as a road of houses because not many of the shops are open! Shops here tend to open when they want to… However, there are establishments selling various lemon products, which the island is renowned for. Take your time to explore the slow pace of life here!
