Sunflower Festival in Zama, Kanagawa

If Sakura is the prima donna of spring, then Sunflower is the diva of summer. Both attract many visitors but their beauties cannot be enjoyed for too long. Just like sakura, sunflowers only last for about 2-3 weeks. This time I had an opportunity to visit the sunflower field located in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture. How does it feel to be among the sunflowers which height can be as high as that of an adult ? Let's find out !

How to Access Zama

Summer in Japan, it is hot and humid but there are so many exciting things that can help you make it through the hot weather. One of them is visiting sunflower field. The place I visited is in Zama in Kanagawa Prefecture. I went to this place by train on Odakyu Odawara line towards Sobudaimae Station. From the station then proceed with a bus ride that takes only a few minutes to the sunflower fields. If you want to walk from the station it will take around 30 minutes.

While sitting on the bus, I could see the fields that were planted with approximately 550,000 bright yellow flowers. When I got off the bus, I felt like I was in a dream world. People seemed very happy to be surrounded by the sunflowers that can only be in full bloom in the end of July until mid-August.

There was also a vegetable vendor who sells freshly picked-up vegetables. so the visitors could buy them after taking pictures with the sunflowers.

Tired and thirsty after taking pictures? There was a booth selling something to drink and shaved ice mixed with sweet syrup or kakigoori. Seats under the tents were provided to rest and as a shelter from the sun.

After taking a rest, I went on my journey to the other side of the field. Turned out there were pumpkins decorated with sunflower hats (although Halloween is still far away). Aren’t they cute?

Walked a little more and I found a glassless frame! Apparently, the visitors were allowed to use it to take pictures. It's as if we were in a painting. Furthermore, you can borrow hats for pictures. Well, it's good to have complete equipment needed to create beautiful pictures. So we don’t have to bother buying the hats. However, feel free if you want to bring your own hats or equipment. I even saw some cosplayers taking pictures in this flower field. So, you are free to wear any costume that makes you look prettier or more handsome!

After walking and taking pictures to my heart’s content, I finally had to part with these flowers. Hope to see you again next year, himawari-chan!
