Japan's Edo-period Travel Boom Started in Shizuoka City!

Jippensha Ikku, a Shizuoka City-born writer active during the era of the 2025 drama "Berabou – Tsutaya Juzaburo: A Tale of Glory and Dreams", published the humorous travel novel "Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige". His work sparked an unprecedented travel boom in the Edo period. The story follows the adventures of Yaji and Kita, two characters also set as natives of Shizuoka City, as they journey through present-day Shizuoka and Fujieda. Their journey includes famous sights like Mt. Fuji and scenes depicted in "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō" ukiyo-e prints.
Tracing the footsteps of Yaji and Kita today, you'll discover how Suruga Province, now a major transportation hub with the Shinkansen and Tōmei Expressway, has historically been a key travel route.

Best Scenic Spots for Mt. Fuji: Miho & Nihondaira Area
Miho no Matsubara

Registered as part of the Mt. Fuji World Cultural Heritage site in June 2013, Miho no Matsubara features a stunning coastal landscape where approximately 30,000 pine trees stretch along a 5km shoreline. The contrast of the deep green pines, white-crested waves, the blue sea, and the majestic Mt. Fuji has been immortalized in numerous artworks, including ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, and in traditional waka poetry.
One highlight of Miho no Matsubara is the legendary "Hagoromo no Matsu" (Pine Tree of the Celestial Robe), associated with the tale of a heavenly maiden. Every October, the Miho Hagoromo Takigi Noh performance is held here. Nearby, you'll also find "Miho Shrine," a sacred power spot and part of the World Heritage site, along with the "Path of the Gods," a mystical road said to be the passage of divine beings. Walking through this area is sure to leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.

In March 2019, the Shizuoka City Miho no Matsubara Cultural and Creative Center, "Mihoshirube," opened its doors. The center features various exhibits exploring the deep connections between Mt. Fuji, Miho no Matsubara, the Legend of the Celestial Robe, and Miho no Matsubara's influence on the arts. Near the entrance, a footbath (available only on weekends and holidays during winter) allows visitors to relax while enjoying the scenic pine forest after a stroll.
