On July 8, 2024, a large-scale complex facility called "SHIBUYA AXSH" opened in the East Exit area of Shibuya Station. This new development is expected to create a vibrant new hub in an area previously known primarily for its office buildings, and it has garnered significant media attention. Our editorial team conducted an in-depth investigation of the newly completed SHIBUYA AXSH, covering its location, entrance and plaza, atrium, and recommended restaurants to bring you the latest information.
What is "SHIBUYA AXSH"?
SHIBUYA AXSH is located in the East Exit area of Shibuya, opposite the West Exit area, which is known for the iconic "Scramble Crossing" and fashion building "SHIBUYA109." Shibuya Station serves multiple lines, including the JR Yamanote Line, Saikyo Line, Shonan-Shinjuku Line, Tokyu Toyoko Line, Den-en-toshi Line, Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Hanzomon Line, Fukutoshin Line, and Keio Inokashira Line. SHIBUYA AXSH is about a one-minute walk from the Ginza Line Hikarie entrance, making it easily accessible. The name "AXSH" combines "A" from the Aoyama area and "SH" from the Shibuya area, with "X" symbolizing the connection between these two areas. It aims to become an icon of the "Ao-Shibu" (Aoyama-Shibuya) area, following the "Oku-Shibu" and "Shibu-Nan" areas.
The building is 23 stories high, with the first to fourth floors housing commercial spaces, including restaurants and art galleries, and the fifth to 23rd floors designated as office spaces. The first and second floors feature an atrium filled with greenery. Although the Shibuya area has many slopes, this atrium provides easy access to the Aoyama area (open from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.).
Slope-free, sheltered access from Shibuya to the Aoyama area!
Previously, accessing Aoyama Dori from Shibuya Station required climbing a slope, but with the opening of SHIBUYA AXSH, you can now reach the area from the ground level of Shibuya Station using escalators and walkways within SHIBUYA AXSH, without climbing any slopes. The decks are sheltered, ensuring you can stay dry during rain and cool during extreme heat. SHIBUYA AXSH is directly connected to the multi-use complex "Shibuya Hikarie," with a pedestrian deck linking the second floors of both buildings, allowing for easy movement between the two.
The opening of SHIBUYA AXSH has also led to the construction of new decks in other areas, improving connectivity and providing the following benefits:
- ① Easier access from the Sakuragaoka area to the Daikanyama and Ebisu areas.
- ② Improved east-west access in the southern area of Shibuya Station.
- ③ Easier access from the east side of Shibuya Station to the Aoyama area.
"SHIBU Spot" on the Shibuya Side and "AO Spot" on the Aoyama Side: The Faces of the Entrances!
SHIBUYA AXSH features large plazas at both the Shibuya and Aoyama sides, serving as the main entrances. The plaza on the Shibuya Station side is called "SHIBU Spot." It has a large see-through vision screen and food trucks, with a symbolic tree, Abies homolepis, that will be decorated with illuminations in winter. On the Aoyama side, there is a plaza called "AO Spot," which features public art by the contemporary art gallery NANZUKA, based in Shibuya.
Let's take a look inside SHIBUYA AXSH and its facilities.
A Green Office Entrance
The third floor houses the office entrance, which gives a surprisingly open impression for an office space. It includes a relaxing area for visitors and office workers to unwind. There are workspaces with tables, chairs, and power outlets by the windows, allowing for simple tasks to be completed.
The Open Atrium Connecting the First and Second Floors
The atrium connecting the first and second floors is a highlight. The first thing you notice is the "vertical garden" with plants hanging from the ceiling. This greenery connects the often fragmented building space with a touch of nature. Various plants are placed throughout, creating a soothing atmosphere.
Highlighted Restaurants, Including Some Firsts in Japan, Open in SHIBUYA AXSH!
The first to fourth floors feature 11 restaurants and cafes with new concepts and first-time openings, a convenience store, a health screening center, and an art gallery (scheduled to open in spring 2025). These facilities cater to office workers and include notable dining options, such as restaurants making their debut in Japan or their second location after Okinawa. Here are some of the standout eateries:
