Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., which operates MUJI, will open a lodging facility "MUJI BASE TESHIMA" on Teshima, Tonosho Town, Shozu County, Kagawa Prefecture, located in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea, on April 26, 2024 (Friday). Teshima in Kagawa Prefecture is one of the venues for the Setouchi Triennale, an art triennial held every three years.
What is "MUJI BASE", a lodging facility operated by MUJI?
MUJI BASE is a medium to long-term stay facility renovated from an old private house, where you can experience the life with "MUJI". It is the second installment following "MUJI BASE KAMOGAWA" which opened in August 2023.
Ryohin Keikaku aims to realize a "good feeling life and society", sharing issues and values with residents and promoting various activities to revitalize the community. "MUJI BASE" is one of these activities, utilizing vacant real estate to create a base for local living, and is a facility that realizes "the joy of living and coexistence with the community".
As lifestyles such as workations are becoming less tied to specific locations, we aim to expand the base of living, experience a calm daily life in places away from the city, and rediscover the charm of the region.
Highlighted at the Setouchi International Art Festival! What is Teshima, where "MUJI BASE TESHIMA" is located?
Teshima is an island located 3.7km west of Shodoshima in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea. With an area of 14.5km² and a population of about 760 people, the island is supported by spring water that flows from the central Danzan Mountain, which has sustained Teshima's rice cultivation, agriculture, and people's lives from ancient times to the present.
In modern times, the island flourished with dairy farming and was known as the "Island of Milk". It is also known as the "Island of Welfare" due to the establishment of advanced welfare facilities shortly after the war.
The illegal dumping of industrial waste that began in the 1970s became one of the largest waste problems nationwide, but efforts to process the illegally dumped waste and regenerate the environment are ongoing. In 2010, facilities for contemporary art, including the Teshima Art Museum, were established, attracting many visitors from both Japan and abroad.
Features of "MUJI BASE TESHIMA"
MUJI BASE TESHIMA is a renovated old house that is over 90 years old, originally renovated as a dormitory for the staff of the Setouchi International Art Festival's artwork and restaurant in 2010. In reusing it as MUJI BASE TESHIMA this time, Ryohin Keikaku planned and designed the interior, making it a facility that embodies the world of MUJI.
In the facility, the water area between the living room and dining room has been removed to allow easy movement between rooms. Also, by removing part of the wall in the living room and installing louvers, an open bedroom space without a sense of pressure has been created. The flooring has also been changed to solid wood flooring.
As a lodging facility on Teshima, known as an island of art, the space is designed with a theme of Japanese aesthetics and perspective. The interior brand "IDÉE" developed by Ryohin Keikaku is in charge of the coordination. In addition to Japanese vintage furniture, modern interior design, and works by Japanese artists, the dishes used during the stay are selected from contemporary artists working mainly in the Setouchi area around Teshima. In addition, a selection of records, books selected by MUJI BOOKS, and MUJI furniture and appliances are also available.
