In Gujo Hachiman, known as Water City, people’s life and culture are closely related to water. This area is rich in spring water spots and beautiful river, so that there are many specialties relating to water. Moreover, people widely utilize spring water in daily life and treat it as a valuable part of human life. If you walk around the town, you’ll notice waterways placed in all parts of town and some ingenious devices to use water efficiently.

Since Gujo Hachiman is located at central area of Gifu, various cultures are carried around the town are mingled with each other, therefore, there are sophisticated traditional products such as texture indigo dyeing, delicious Japanese Sake etc.

One spot you should definitely visit is the Gujo Hachiman Castle. After abandoned castle in 1871 because of government policy, Gujo Hachiman Castle was rebuilt in 1933. It is known as the oldest castle made by wood! People visit the castle to enjoy the gorgeous view every single season. Especially in autumn, because castle and autumn leaves are illuminated in November. The other seasons are worth visiting as well. Winter white view covered with snow, or spring cherry blossom.

In Hachiman city, there are unique summer festival. What the festival makes unique is the term of the festival. People hold summer festival from mid-July to beginning of September (33 days). Amazingly, every single night, they dance, and the last couple of days, they stay up all night while dancing.

Don’t you want to experience the festival dance? If so, let’s join in! Anybody can participate the festival dance. Any dress code? No, you can take part in the festival dance with casual clothings. All you need is a little brave to go into a dancing formation and imitate the dance. Of course if you have Kimono (a traditional cotton cloth), by all means, you should wear and enjoy dancing! Besides summer festival, spring and autumn festival take place as well.

Water is necessary for all of us, however, we rarely think the importance because it exists so close to our life. This town makes us rethink about water from various aspects. Why don’t you travel here for again recognizing the importance, and the beauty of water?
