Unagi has a long history in Japanese cuisine. Nowadays Japanese people have unagi on celebration day. This time, I’ll share not only fancy restaurants, but also places with reasonable price. Let’s get started!
1.Urawa: Hikoboshi (浦和:彦星)
Urawa is located in Saitama where you can access less than 30 minutes by train. Known as a birthplace of Kabayaki which is one of a traditional way of cooking unagi, Urawa has many unagi restaurants. The below one is ‘Hikoboshi’ located near Urawa Station!
Cozy atmosphere, yet fancy design! You can enjoy various unagi menus with Japanese sake!
The above meal is Hitsumabushi (1,700 Yen). As mentioned in previous article, there are 4 ways of eating it. First, eat just as it is, then put seasonings, lastly pour a special soup!
As Hikoboshi’s signature menu, please check ‘Kushiyaki’ (a roasted unagi on a skewer) too!

2.Tokyo: Tenkazushi (東京:天下寿司)
Although there are bunch of well-established eel restaurants in Tokyo, I dare to introduce ‘Tenkazushi’ which is a noted conveyor belt sushi restaurant. There are seven restaurants in Tokyo, including Shibuya and Ikebukuro. Here, you can have unagi at an affordable price. The above one is Eel sushi (185 Yen).
In many conveyor belt restaurants, you see Anago sushi (Conger eel sushi) as well, Anago has a similar looks and texture. Try both and find a difference!

3.Fukuoka prefecture: Tomimatsu Unagi (富松うなぎ)

Since eel is grown in comparatively warm environment, southern part of Japan is often taken up as a famous unagi spot. Tomimatsu Unagi in Fukuoka prefecture is a famous unagi restaurant with a history dating back to the 1930s. In the region, people say “when it comes to Unagi, it is Tomimatsu Unagi!” They purchase freshest fishes from wide range of food warehouses.
