Sendai City Museum can be found within the ruins just outside of the Sendai Castle and is surrounded by luscious nature. With cultural assets such as donations to Sendai's Date clan, there are many documents, exhibitions, and more that relate to Sendai's history, culture, and beauty. The museum itself was opened in the year 1961.

There are items here from UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme, national treasures including 'materials related to the Keicho-era mission to Europe' as well as important cultural properties that were given as gifts to the political leader Date Masamune such as furniture, battle surcoats, Toyotomi Hideyoshi furniture, and Hatsuko Mizawa business-related belts. There are also many other items that relate to the history, culture, and handicrafts from Sendai, with over 98,000 items in total. In the main exhibition hall, you're able to see 1000 different items on exhibition, as well as learn about Sendai's history and culture. There are also many other unique and interesting exhibitions that have various themes from both inside and outside of Japan.

If you're looking to buy some souvenirs from Sendai City Museum, then here is where you'll want to go. there are many original and unique products being sold here. The most popular being furoshiki (a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth) and handkerchiefs.  There are also exhibition picture books and other Sendai history-related items for sale.

Sendai's Traditional Arts & Crafts Corner

This is the  Traditional Arts & Crafts Corner which can be found within the museum shop. Here you can find Sendai chest of drawers, Matsukawa Daruma, jeweled beetles, and much more that have been made by some of Sendai's most skilled craftsmen and women.

"San-no-Maru" Restaurant

This is a western restaurant that is connected to the Sendai City Museum. You can look out onto the castle ruins park from the restaurant, so it's a perfect place to take a break.

  • Access: 8-minute walk from Southern Exit 1 of the Tozai Underground Railway Line "International Center Station"
  • Business Hours: 9:00~16:45 (Last entrance is at 16:15)

    • The following day after a public holiday (In the event it is a weekend, the institution will be closed)
  • Entrance Fee: General / University Students 460 Yen, Highschool Student 230 Yen, Elementary / middle school student 110 Yen

※Sendai City Museum will be closed from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2024 due to large-scale renovation work. Scheduled to reopen in April 2024.
