Yebisu Garden Place

Yebisu Garden Place is situated in the Ebisu district in Tokyo, hence its name, and sits between Shibuya and Dakanyama in the north as well as Megruo, Shingawa and Gotanda in the south. The facility is often billed as a ‘city within a city’ as you will find more than a dozen buildings here that even include two museums and a department store.

Getting There:
To get to Yebisu Garden Place you can take the JR Yamanote Line to Ebisu Station which is south of Shibuya Station. You can walk directly to Yebisu Garden Place from the station through the dedciated Yebisu Skywalk.

Yebisu Garden Place is made up of a number of different areas that include museums, towers, and even outdoor movie areas.

Attractions:
Central Square:
You can easily identify the Central Square as it has a large arch that stands proud over a promenade. The square is built on a French theme and to that end has a Marionette Clock Square where you will find a signature automated clock that plays a tune at 12pm, 3pm, and 6pm daily. There is also a Chateau Square which is designed with cobbled streets and a French chateau. The recreation of the chateau is also the location of La Table de Joel Robuchon, a Michelin starred French restaurant.

Yebisu Garden Place Tower:

Yebisu Garden Place Tower is the place to come if you want to look out over Tokyo. The views here are said to be gorgeous and you can take in the impressive skyline from an observation deck within the tower that is free of charge to enter. There are bars and restaurants located within the tower as well as a Mizuho Bank and a post office.

Yebisu Shrine:
This is one of the quieter parts of Yebisu Garden Place where people come for quiet contemplation and worship.

Sapporo Square:
Located by the Sapporo Beer headquarters lies Sapporo Square which is actually modeled on a traditional English garden. This is an excellent spot to come for a stroll in the late afternoon sunshine.

Museums:
Museum of Yebisu Beer:
The entire location of Yebisu Garden Place stands on the former site of a brewery and nowadays you can still sample the Yebisu Beer that has been manufactured in this area and dates from 1890. If you are visiting Yebisu Garden Place, then you can visit the Museum of Yebisu Beer at the same time and find out how the beer is made and learn about the history of this brand through a series of interesting galleries and exhibits. There is also a tasting room where you can sample some of the brews on offer here, and there is also an attached restaurant named the ‘Beer Station’ where you can get a bite to eat paired with one of the delicious beers. It is free to visit the museum if you choose a self guided tour or ¥500 for a guided tour that includes a beer tasting session at the end.

Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography:
At the west corner of Yebisu Garden Place lies the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography where you will find 4 floors dedicated to the preservation of photography and video equipment. This is the only museum in Japan dedicated to displaying photography memorabilia, so it is well worth a stop if you are in the area. There are more than 24,000 pieces in the collections here, and you will find three different themed display galleries as well as a movie hall.

Restaurants:
There are a wealth of restaurants to choose from at Yebisu Garden Place including Chinese, French, Italian, Singaporean, and Thai cuisines. You will also find cafe culture favorites like coffee shops including Starbucks as well as the Ginza Lion Beer Hall.

Shops:
There are a huge number of shops in Yebisu Garden Place including the Mitsukoshi Department Store that also features a food hall.

There is also an open air market here that sells handicrafts, clothes, and flowers.

Entertainment:
K-Theater:
The K-Theater at Yebisu Garden Place is known for being the first theater in Japan that is dedicated to all things related to K-Pop, or Korean Pop Music. You can come here to take in a concert so make sure to check out local listings to see what’s on.

Film screenings:
If you happen to be at Yebisu Garden Place in the summer months then you can catch an outdoor film screening that takes place here.

Hotels:
The Westin:
The closest hotel to Yebisu Garden Place is the Westin which is a luxury hotel built in the European style. This well known chain has all the amenities you would expect such as several restaurants, a spa, and several bar areas.

Cosmic Configuration Sculptures:

Located just outside the offices of the headquarters of the famous Sapporo Beer lies an amazing art installation area known as the Cosmic Configuration Sculptures that are the work of Kenji Mikawa, a famous Japanese artist. You will also find a wealth of other sculptures in the area by well known sculptors such as Rodin, Maillol, and Bourdelle, as well as many works by Japanese artists.
