WMG 2021 KANSAI Special Activity Plans ~ Enjoying Nutritious Foods ~

the WORLD MASTERS GAMES (WMG) 2021 KANSAI is a giant sports festival where if you're a lover of sports over the age of 30 you can participate in various sporting events regardless of past experience. From the 14th to the 30th of May 2021 this event will be held in Japan’s Kansai region for the first time in all of Asia. There are a total of 35 events with 59 different variations including sports such as field and track, badminton, basketball,swimming and many more which will be held throughout areas around the 9 different prefectures of Fukui, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama, Tottori and Tokushima over a 17 day period. You can participate in 5 of the 59 total events by paying the basic fee.

Another of the festivals amazing features is the ability to not only participate in the events themselves, but also fully enjoy and experience various sightseeing and cultural exchange activities. We are introducing 5 different themes in this series being “Enjoying culture and tradition”, “Enjoying nutritious foods”, “Enjoying outdoor experiences”, “Enjoying nature” and “Enjoying various sightseeing.”

In the previous article we introduced the “Tradition & Culture” activity plan. In the second article in this series, this one, we are going to be introducing “Enjoying Nutritious Foods.” We will be introducing things such as local foods, and new and interesting ways to enjoy yourself while you participate in your personal activities and events!

Depending on the sport/event, there may be additional fees. Furthermore, if you only wish to spectate the event, there is no fee or registration required for entry.

“Enjoying Nutritious Foods” Plan in Osaka!

Osaka, which is known as a “Food Heaven” is hosting the BMX, rugby, and open water swimming events. It is famously known for its foods such as okonomiyaki, takoyaki, kushiage, and much more. Osaka, which is also called “The Kitchen of the Nation” has many pride-filled old-style Japanese confectionery stores that house lots of delicacies. Whilst enjoying Japan’s delicate beauty, how about taking part in the experience of creating some traditional Japanese confectionery? In Higashiosaka where the rugby events are being held, you can experience creating your own Japanese confectionery (A confectionery called "nerikiri") as well as a tea ceremony (You will be lectured on how to prepare matcha tea (green tea)). The costs for these activities start from 5,300 JPY and the required time is 1 hour and 45 minutes. Osaka is not just gourmet foods and delicacies, but is also western Japan’s largest economic area and a domestic gateway for Kansai International Airport. Due to being surrounded by rivers, Osaka was known as the “City of water” and advanced its economics through water-based transport. It is full of spots to see and things to do including viewing the beautiful nightscape, enjoying nature, and seeing Osaka’s castle which is recognized as a national place of beauty. How about experiencing WMG2021 KANSAI alongside visiting Osaka’s castle and streets which both hold an abundance of history and culture?

Hyogo Prefecture’s “Enjoying Nutritious Foods” Plan

Hyogo Prefecture, where the world heritage site Himeji Castle is located, is host to swimming (diving, water polo, artistic swimming), taekwondo, tennis, orienteering (forest), volleyball (beach), canoeing (polo), and clay shooting events. To the north is the sea of Japan, while to the south is the Seto Inland Sea, each having different climates and natural features, there are various foods you can enjoy such as “Kobe Beef”, “Kasumigani (Chionoecetes japonicus)”, and delicious Japanese sake.

Hyogo Prefecture is surrounded by climates that are perfect for the creation of sake, and through great water, rice, and technique, they hold the number one spot for the production of Japanese sake, and are called “Japan’s best location for sake.” How about seeing how this sake is made and experience the elegant smell of Japanese sake? Other than Japanese sake, there are other experiences you can check out such as the making of soy sauce which uses absolutely no chemical seasonings or preservatives, soba making experience, Japanese confectionery making, and wine tasting where you can receive an original bottle cover made using Kita-Harima banshu-ori. all of these experiences range from 2,000 to 23,000 JPY. The required time ranges from 40 minutes to 5 hours, and the are various different plans to choose from meaning you can choose one that fits your personal schedule. Furthermore, Hyogo prefecture boasts over 1000 castle ruin sites, 22 of which are national heritage sites, it has a fashionable sea, mountains and towns, and with both the city itself and the castle surrounded by nature, it is also known as a “miniature Japan.” How about trying out this plan for the WMG2021 KANSAI event in Hyogo prefecture which has both a modern and nostalgic feel to it?
