“Mt. Omuro” could be regarded as the symbol of Ito city, Shizuoka. The unique, beautiful mountain was formed by an eruption 4,000 years ago. At its peak is a panoramic view of the entire Izu area, which is a must-see for visitors.

Mt. Omuro is a small hill in Shizuoka prefecture. It was formed by an eruption 4,000 years ago, with a mortar-shaped crater with a diameter around 250-300m; it is the largest scoria cone among all volcanoes in east Izu. The traditional ritual “controlled burn” has been around since the past for the preservation of the beautiful bowl-shaped outline of the mountain. The mountain is designated as a natural monument that trekking is prohibited. Visitors needs to use the gondola to reach its peak.
Various Faces Stemmed from the Eruption of Mt. Omuro
The Mt. Omuro eruption 4,000 years ago formed the scoria cone with a large amount of lava outflow to the foot of the hill. “Izu Shaboten Zoo” is one of the sightseeing spots built in the lava spot. The lava flow also formed the Jogasaki Coast. On clear days, visitors can be embraced by the magnificent view of the beautiful landscape formed by the volcanoes in east Izu, including the small Omuro, Lake Ippeki , along with Mt. Fuji, and the Jogasaki Coast formed by the lava of Mt. Omuro.
Get to the Peak by Gondola Ride!
Visitors can climb up to the peak of Mt. Omuro by gondola rides to indulge in the panoramic view of Izu at the peak. The operation hours vary in different seasons- 9 am- 4:45 pm from 6th -15th March; 9 am- 5:15 pm from 16th March -30th September; and 9 am- 4:15 pm from 1st Oct -5th March. Be mindful that the captioned hours are all subjected to occasional changes. The fair of the ride is 500 yen for adult passengers (junior high school or above, round trip) and 250 yen for kids (above 4-year-old, round trip).
Archery at the Eruption Remains at Mt. Omuro
At the peak, there is a 70m deep mortar-shaped crater and an archery field for players on all levels, from beginners to advanced players opening at 600 yen per hour (adult, junior high school or above). Players should be above the height of 140 cm and able to handle archery tools safely.
“Cherry Blossoms Festival” at the Flower Spot of Mt. Omuro
“Cherry blossoms village” is at the foot of Mt. Omuro, which is 40,000m2 large with over 3,000 cherry blossoms trees in as many as 37 different kinds of the beautiful flower. “Cherry Blossom Village Festival” is held in early April every year.
Access to Mt. Omuro
To get to Mt. Omuro from Tokyo, take shinkansen at Tokyo station and head to “Atami station” (approx. 40mins). Change to JR line at Atami station and head to “Ito station” (approx. 40mins). Take Tokai bus, and get off at “Izu Shaboten Zoo” for direct access to the mountain.
