Shizuoka's Shimizu Port

Shimizu Port is said to be one of Japan's top three beautiful ports because of its scenic beauty, surrounded by Mt. Fuji and the Miho Matsubara (a coast lined with pine groves). Shimizu Port has a long history, and there is a record that relief ships sent to Korea's Baekje kingdom left from this port back in the 600s. From the Sengoku period to the Edo period, it was heavily used as a military base and opened to the outside world in the Meiji period. The port has also played an important role in Japan during the period of high economic growth, supporting the economy as an import port for various raw materials. In addition, about half of the tuna consumed in Japan is brought in at Shimizu Port, and it boasts the best tuna catches in Japan.
