In his 19-year time as a professional player, he won 69 champions, including 47 in the BWF super series. In addition, he has won the silver medals three times respectively in the Badminton World Championships and the Olympics. Since Malaysia Open 2018, he has been at the top of the world ranking (*) when he defeated Kento Momota in his last world championship before retirement.

Badminton, a Hot Sport Also in Japan

In recent years, Japan has been rising in world competitions as one of the strongest countries comparable with China, Indonesia, and Denmark. Japanese players appear in the top-3 in all categories of badminton’s world rankings. Besides, players Kento Momota, Akane Yamaguchi, and the pair Wakana Nagahara & Mayu Matsumoto are the no. 1 in male singles, female singles, and female doubles.

Japan’s female player team is particularly strong that it has won the Uber Cup for six times including in 2018. At the same time, the male team led by Kento Momota is also rising quickly. Park Joo-bong, the head coach of Japan’s badminton team plays a vitally important role in the growth of the team all in all. It is also attention-attracting to know that he was once the head coach of Malaysia’s team!

Japan shone through as the champion in the Thomas Cup in 2014 for the first time and entered the final round in 2018- it showed the world a swift rise.

The rise of Japanese badminton players might have brought about the growth of its popularity in Japan. The number of members of the Nippon Badminton Association reached 300 thousand (it multiplied approx. three times in 30 years!) It is becoming more pervasive to see small children in Japan enjoying the sport- in this sense, maybe the children in Japan are growing in a more similar way to those in Malaysia!
