Nagasaki Peace Park in Nagasaki, Japan, is on a small hill in Nagasaki city. In its history on August 9th, 1945, many people became victims when the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. It is a space that represents the hope for world peace and that we never have another tragic war.
Split Into Five Zones, Nagasaki Peace Park
Nagasaki Peace Park is approximately 2.5 km from Nagasaki station. The area of the park is about 18.5 hectares. In 1951, the park was built as a commemoration of world peace and cultural exchange, and to appeal the reality of the atomic bomb incident. The park is split into 5 zones. “The Zone of Hopes” where statues and monuments were built to wish for world peace, “The Zone of Prayers” where the bomb was dropped, “The Learning Zone” where the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Materials Centre is, “The Plaza Zone” is where Track and Field events are held, and “The Sports Zone” is where soccer games are held and a swimming pool is set.
The Monuments at Nagasaki Peace Park
“The Prayer Zone” , focuses on peace commemoration statues that were donated from other countries, such as the “Peace Fountain”. It is a space that hopes for peace where lots of people come and visit.
The Statues at Nagasaki Peace Park
In Nagasaki Peace Park, there is a Peace Prayer Statue that symbolizes the hope for peace for Nagasaki citizens. It is 9.7m and weighs 30t and was made out of bronze by Nagasaki citizen Seibo Kitamura. It symbolizes God’s Love and Buddhist compassion, and the right hand pointing to the heavens represents the threat of the atomic bomb, the flatly held left hand represents peace, and the slightly closed eyelids represent the prayer of happiness in the next life for the victims of the atomic bomb. Every year on August 8th, the anniversary of the atomic bomb dropping, a commemoration ceremony is performed in front of the statue.

To access Nagasaki Peace Park from Tokyo, take a plane from Haneda Airport to Nagasaki Airport and take a bus to Nagasaki Station. From Nagasaki Station take the tram to Nagasaki Peace Park Station and it is 3 minutes on foot from the station.
