About the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery
The Higashiyama Kaii Gallery is an annex to The Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum. Endowed with a donation of artworks and books from Japanese artist Higashiyama Kaii, the gallery was opened in 1990. The collection holds about 960 pieces in one place. The building was designed by architect Taniguchi Yoshio, and was designed to act as a frame to the artwork. Because the museum is in a park, it has a courtyard with a small pond and low walls, to help the building harmonize with the surroundings. It is an open, inviting space that is conscious of its location in a public park. The annex is currently under renovation, but is planned to reopen on October 5, 2019.
