I am sure most of you have heard of Kobe Beef. How many of you have heard of Kobe... sheep? horse? goat? In the next three articles, allow me to introduce you to Rokkosan pasture, a Kobe city-owned pasture in the highlands of Mount Rokko. Here, animals are allowed to roam free and happy as they would in the movies, and best of all, we can visit the animals and interact with them!

I first came to the knowledge of this pasture while looking at a sightseeing map of Kobe. Seeing that it is high up in Mount Rokko where the temperatures are cooler, I decided to take a trip up to escape the summer heat. To get to the Rokkosan Pasture is a bit of a hassle, but I assure you that it is worth all the trouble.

First, find your way to the Mount Rokko Cable Shita station. From there, buy a round trip ticket up. This should cost 1000 Yen. The views from the cable car are stunning so do try to sit in the open air carriage of the car! On the way up, take note of not only the stunning view of Kobe, but also the beautiful nature surrounding the tracks.

At the top, you will find yourself at the Mount Rokko Cable Sanjo Station, make your way to the Rokko Maya Sky Shuttle Bus, and ride the bus to Rokkosan Pasture. This trip should cost you only 290 Yen for adults, and 150 Yen for children. It is possible for you to walk, but at 4km, make sure you have ample time and energy! If you take the bus, you will stop right in front of the pasture. One thing you will notice is that there are not a lot of foreign travelers around, and that the visitors are mostly Japanese people. This is because the bus comes infrequently (once an hour) and most people prefer to drive. If you are the type who likes adventuring off the beaten track, this is definitely for you!
