The ropeway ride begins at the base station, “Kitano-itchome”.
I queue up and wait for my turn to take the red ropeway up to the top of the hill to the herb garden.
The sounds are exciting – the sound of cables running builds up anticipation of the journey.
Finally, it’s my turn to board the gondola (which can fit up to five people), and I’m sent off in a rush up the mountain.

As the gondola ascends, on the right-hand side, you will see magnificent views of Kobe.
The building that will stand out the most is the “pencil building”, designed to look like a pencil standing on its flat side.
Beyond you will see the central areas of Sannomiya and Motomachi, the sea, and the two man-made islands, Rokko and Port Islands.
The ride is almost too short – I have arrived at the herb garden.

The herb garden itself is extremely relaxing; it’s an expanse space in which you walk down the hill.
The marvellous views, the tea house and restaurants, and the botanical garden in the glass houses will keep you busy for a while.
Alternatively, you can roll around on the grass fields while enjoying the views, perhaps with a picnic!

The ropeway station is located about five minutes away from Shin-Kobe station, on the Shinkansen and Subway lines.
Although standard business hours are 10am-5pm, business hours vary from season-to-season so you should check in advance.
