Many people travel to Kyoto to take a peek into Japanese lives during the Edo period (1603 - 1868). Kyoto is the cultural capital of Japan, at least until the modern era when Japan went through a rapid change within the 20th century.
However, did you know that there was another place where you can experience the landscapes of the Edo period?
Located in northern Gifu prefecture, Hida-Takayama is a historic district famous for its city scape that has not changed since the Edo period. Unlike Tokyo or Osaka, you won’t see skyscrapers standing tall above your head. Rather, you’ll enjoy the beautiful scenery of mountains changing its color season after season.
Hida Takayama is also famous for “Hida-gyu”, a brand beef highly regarded as one of the best in Japan along with Kobe beef or Matsuzaka beef. At Hida Takayama, beef is traditionally served on a leaf that adds a soothing aroma to the meat, and miso sauce that well compliments the overall plate.
Another attraction for tourists would be the carriage, or “Rikisha”. In the medieval period, bureaucrats would take the Rikisha around town to enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as the people.
