You can hear this week’s Fun Japan word everyday during early spring season in Japan !
“Sotsugyou”卒業 means “graduation” in Japanese.

During february and march the end of the Japanese school year, there’s “sotsugyo” ceremony in every Japanese school or university.


“Sotsugyou” ceremony are a very big thing, especially in universities where girls are wearing a traditional outfit made from a colorful kimono and hakama pant like in the Meiji period.

You can't miss them in the street !


“Sotsugyou” is also used in other domain, when you want to say you finish some activity and going to make something else in your life.
It’s widely used for Japanese singers, celebrity and especially idols when they announce they’ll quit their band or idol activities.

You can also use “sotsugyo” to say that you graduated from some school.
