Well, this is something that happens to anyone: Having to go to the bathroom.
Knowing how to identify or ask for the bathroom is a vital need. 

So let’s learn how to say it in Japanese!

There three main way to say “bathroom” in Japanese.
You might have seen those words on the bathroom doors but also on many signs.

The first and most simple one is “Toire”(トイレ), a derivative of the English word “Toilets”

There’s a second, a little bit more chic which is called “O-tearai” (お手洗い) which literally means “The place to wash hands” but nowadays it means “The bathroom”. 

The last one is used only for women toilets, it’s “Keshô shitsu” (化粧室)  aka “The Powder Room”.

And now here are many useful sentences:

トイレはどこですか?
Toire wa doko desu ka?
Where are the bathroom?

トイレに行きたいです。
Toire ni ikitai desu.
I want to go to the bathroom.

And those ones may spare you some confusing situations.

女性トイレですか?
Josei toire desu ka?
This is the bathroom for women?

男性トイレですか?
Daisei toire desu ka ?
This is the bathroom for men?

Well, if you master those sentences, you can survive through your trip.
