Hey, everyone! Today I’m going to be introducing Kuriya Kashi Kurogi, a popular Japanese cafe situated in the Hongo Campus of the University of Tokyo that was opened in 2014. You can enjoy freshly-made Japanese sweets from Yushima-based kappo restaurant Kurogi, and the finest quality coffee from specialty cafe Sarutahiko Coffee! It’s located on the first (ground) floor of the Daiwa Ubiquitous Computing Research Building, which is near the university’s Kasuga Gate. Its atmospheric, cedar tree-shrouded facade really catches the eye.

(The terrace feels so spacious!)

Once I’m inside, I make my order. When you order one of the Japanese sweet sets, you can choose the strength (light or dark) and brewing method (espresso, drip brew, etc.) of the coffee, as well as café lattes, cappuccinos, and so forth! The sets also come with salted snacks and dried sugar confectionaries (higashi). I order the warabi-mochi set, and sit relaxing in my seat enjoying the view of the garden of the former Maeda residence, when it arrives!

(The cute plate is wonderful, too!)

These authentic warabi-mochi are made when ordered, using 100% pure hon-warabi-ko, only 100g of which can be obtained from 10 kilos of warabi root! The sleek warabi-mochi have just the right consistency and a smooth taste, making them irresistibly delicious!

After tasting them on their own, I try them with kinako (roasted soybean flour)—which comes in plain and matcha flavors—and brown sugar syrup! Again, they’re delicious! They go perfectly with the Kinu Shizuku ice coffee (dark) that I ordered with them, too!
There’s lots more on offer here, too, including kudzu-giri (kudzu starch noodles) made from 100% Yoshino Kudzu, fresh high-grade confectioneries, and dried sugar confectionaries (higashi) made only from refined Japanese sugar from Tokushima Prefecture, which make great souvenirs.
