This week in Fun Japan Word, let’s learn how to say a very useful thing, umbrella !

In Japanese, « kasa » is the word used for umbrella.
Look at the chinese character 傘, it really looks like an umbrella!!
It’s very easy to remember it!

« Kasa » is the basic word to describe a normal umbrella used for rain.

You can find transparent plastic umbrellas everywhere in Japan for a cheap price, especially in convini. 
Those umbrellas are made from vinyl so their name is « binuru kasa ».

For foldable umbrellas, just ask for « oritatami kasa ».

For umbrella used for protecting from sun, which are very popular in Japan where girls and women want to avoid tan for keeping a white skin, just use « higasa »日傘.
« higasa »日傘. is a combination of « hi » sun and « kasa » umbrella. 
Most of them are made in a special material which can cut UV rays.

Traditional japanese paper umbrellas are called « wagasa » 和傘。

There’s plenty of rain goods and umbrellas available in Japan, it could made a nice and useful souvenir to bring back home !
