Lavender season is coming soon from throughout July and August in some areas in Hokkaido. A carpet of the beautiful violet color of lavender in the field is absolutely worth to see one time in your life. If you are in Japan at this time of the season, you should pay a visit to go there.

Furano is one of the most famous district for Lavender farms. The area is one of the favored spot to visit among Japanese people as well as they became famous after being used as a location of a two-decade-long TV drama series called Kita no kuni kara, literary means “From a north country.” There are many lavender farms in the area you can visit though one of the famous spot is called “Farm Tomita”.

Farm Tomita is a farm located in Nakahurano-cho. They are so popular that there is a traffic jam in the surrounding area to get to the parking for the farm for the weekend during the season. The reason of this traffic jam is to see the biggest lavender farm in Hokkaido. The history of the farm is going back in 1958, the owner of Farm Tomita back then, Tadao Tomita started to grow lavender in the area. Now, you can observe lavender from this hilltop farm and the fields spread out across the countryside toward Furano Basin and Tokachidake Mountain Range.

As of the popularity of the farm and other neighbor farms in the area, there is a seasonal limited station called “Lavender Farm Station” from June to October so you can get there even if you don’t have a car. (Though we recommend you book the ticket in advance.)

In Farm Tomita, they sell their original potpourri and essential oil in the store. Also they have lavender flavored soft serve ice cream made from the harvest.

In addition to Farm Tomita, there are many farms in the area. Nakafurano Choei Lavender Farm is located close to Farm Tomita, and they grow lavender in high slope of the mountain. You can go to the top of the mountain via lift. From the top, you can view the lavender field to the surrounding areas at the bottom and mountains beyond.

Sayaka no oka is another lavender farm close by to Farm Tomita. Here you can do lavender picking in their 6-hectare lavender field.

To see more lavender, we recommend you drive down on the national route 237, which is called, “Hanabito Road” from Furano to Biei. You will enjoy the endless violet color on the road so that you can be a curious traveler and stop by many places as much as you want.
