Beautiful picture of goldfishes, right?
Well, can you believe if I said this is not an actual fish nor water, but drawing?
Japanese artist, Riusuke Fukahori is known for resin-based goldfish artist.
He paints three-dimensional goldfish embedded in layers of resin.
I’ve seen his work here and there from internet, TV or magazine, but never actually seen them directly. Then I’ve heard he is putting on a solo exhibit at the Seibu Shibuya Department Store.
I was thrilled to find out about it and there was apparently no reason not to visit there.
According to his autobiography, a reason why he started to draw goldfish was pretty magical.
It goes like this. He was laying down on his bed one day with his mental stress from being a low point of his career. Then he noticed a goldfish in a small fish tank by his bed all in sudden, which he has been careless of. At the moment of seeing the shiny red goldfish in the filthy water, he knew that it is going to change his life.
Since then, he has been producing many magnificent works of goldfish which fascinate people all over the world.
These fish look like they could be plucked straight out of the water.
So what he does to create these lifelike goldfish goes like follow.
First to pour thin layer of resin, then he paints goldfish with acrylic paint, little by little.
Pour a little more resin on top, then add a little more detail. Gradually, layer by layer.
After having a chance to get a close look at his works in person, they amazed me even more.
