Many tourists choose Tokyo for their first trip to Japan, then maybe a day or two at Kyoto for a cultural experience. “What’s next?” you might ask, and a lot of people would probably recommend Osaka or Nagoya for their vibrant culture, maybe Hokkaido for its food and skiing, but do you want a truly unique experience? Something that not even your Japanese friends know of?

If so, consider Nagasaki on your list of destinations for this summer vacation.

Located in the western island of Kyushu, Nagasaki was one of the first ports to open international trade in Japan. Hence, it is one of the most exotic cities in the archipelago along with Yokohama and Kobe. More so, Nagasaki has been distant from central politics (which has mainly happened in Kyoto and Tokyo), creating the city’s free and artistic atmosphere.

However, the city is also rich in natural resources, which creates a beautiful contrast between nature and illuminations. And nothing speaks of it louder than this festival hosted every summer.

Tanada, or terraced rice-fields, is a type of rice farming that uses slopes to effectively circulate water around the multiple steps of rice fields. The landscape is seen in many parts of Asia, and Japan is one of them.

However, the city of Nagasaki brings this beautiful landscape up to the next level during September when they host the Doya Tanada no Hi-matsuri, or “Doya Tanada Fire Festival”.

During September, over 2000 torches are placed along the terraces, where you’d see this majestic scene.

The festival is fairly new, holding its 11th event in 2016. The festival celebrates great harvesting in the field, and there are orchestra music as well as many dance acts by many locals. It has not yet been discovered by many Japanese, so it won’t be as crowded as other major events, which is a definite plus!
