5 Reasons Why You Have to Visit Sumida River @Asakusa

Although it is currently known as one of the biggest megalopolis around the world with highways running through everywhere, Tokyo was once a city ran by multiple rivers and canals. We could still see remains of the early transport around the city where most of the canals have already been reclaimed.

Out of all the rivers that remain, Sumida River running through Asakusa all the way down to Tokyo Bay is arguably the most important feature of the city. And here’s a list to show you why.

This, To Start Out With

You’re probably well aware of the relationship between Japan and cherry blossoms. Saying that it is “special” would be an understatement. For many Japanese people, the “sakura” means everything from life, philosophy, beauty, or the truth of all existence (yes, we mean this).
Now, combine that with the latest symbol of the capital, and we get this. This image by itself would make more Japanese people proud than our actual national flag.

The Nightview Shows Our Long Way To Modernization

Since the river runs right through the capital, we’d see neon lights reflected on the water surface, creating an unique contrast between civilization and its nature. It’s as good as any illumination shows you’d seen, even better than Disneyland. The fact that it is free also helps.

The Sunrise Is A Stunner As Well

If you had gone to sleep early the previous day and woke up earlier than expected, take a walk along the Sumida River, and you’d realize that the city has much more to provide than neon lights. The cool breeze flowing from the bay would swift through with a hinting the slightest change in season. What makes the sunrise at Sumida River even better is the fact that you won’t see as many people as you would during the rest of the day. many locals would enjoy a morning walk, but it’s much less compared to the city which is usually packed with people.

Did I Mention That The Sunset Is Equally As Beautiful?

Realize that the pallet of light that beams through the city changes from sunrise to sunset. It is warm, yet brings a glorious feel to the capital. One more thing you’d like to look for is the smell. You’d realize that the city would release a different atmosphere as time passes.

No, it is not a space ship, neither is it from some Sci-Fi movie. It is a functioning tourist boat running from Asakusa to Odaiba. For 780yen, you’d run up and down the river and all the important sites along the route, while enjoying the city from a perspective you’ve never seen before. It is estimated that it’d take a few more decades until we’d go on a space trip, why not feel like you’re on one at Tokyo?

And Traditional Boat Rides Too

If you’re here for a traditional tour bringing you back to the past rather than the future, there’s always an option for a “yakatabune” ride where you’d enjoy the scenery as well as a full course meal served on the boat. Although it requires a huge group to be on one, some tours have plans for travellers, so make sure to search for “yakatabune” before you come here.

And It’s The Venue Of One Of The Biggest Summer Events In Japan

Fireworks at Sumida River is one of the biggest events that get people excited during the summer. Held in late August every year, about 950,000 people come to the event to enjoy the beautiful fireworks illuminating the night sky. Many locals wait in line from the day before to get the best spot to see it, so be prepared to dedicate atleast two days if you’d like to have the full package. However, you7d also be able to take a great veiw of it from hotels close by, so that is also recommended.

Sumida River runs right along Asakusa. If you are up for some eccentric and unordinary tour around the capital city, make sure to take your time along the river.
