Walking up the stairs is the most tiring thing for us humans. Am I right?
But if you choose not to climb the stairs you can also climb up using the escalator (which is not tiring at all)
But if you choose to use the escalator do you have to stand on the right or on the left?
When you go to singapore maybe we all know that if you use the escalator and you just want to stand still and wait for the escalator to bring you or down you should stand on the left side and if you want to go walking up the escalator you can walk on the right side.
But if you choose to use the escalator in Japan where do you have to stand?
As we all know Japan have lots of cities. Well, it’s a big country, like Saitama, Yokohama, Nagano, Tokyo, Osaka etc.
Let’s take an example of the two biggest cities in Japan = Tokyo and Osaka.
Did you know that even though Japan is one country they have a different habits of using escalator.
The picture above is a picture that I took when I went on a trip to Osaka.
For your information, if you go to Osaka you have to stand on the right side.
And this picture is a picture that I took in Tokyo.
If you are in Tokyo you have to stand on the left side.
Unlike Indonesia, do you know why Japan has these kinds of rules.
Well, people here are really busy they have their own schedules and what if they are late to go to a meeting or to school, of course if they are late they won’t stand on an escalator they would walk.
So that’s why it’s good to apply these rules when we use the escalator so we 他の人に迷惑をかけない(Hoka no hito ni meiwaku o kakenai) which means we don’t give other people trouble. We have our own schedules and other people have their own schedules too. It’s good if you follow the rules because we respect other people and other people will respect us too :)
And while we are talking about escalators let’s learn a bit of Japanese.
Escalator → エスカレーター Esukare-ta-
Escalator which goes up → 上りエスカレーター Nobori Esukare-ta-
Escalator which goes down → 下りエスカレーター Kudari Esukare-ta-
So don’t forget to stand on the left side when you are in Tokyo and on the right side if you are in Osaka! :)
