Lee’s Travelog – Japan’s Best Aquarium – Marine Pier Nihonkai

Marine Pier Nihonkai – or the Niigata City Aquarium – is probably the best aquarium in Japan. The writer admits she hasn’t visited all the aquariums in Japan, which is why ‘probably’ is included. However, the beautiful displays and the tremendous thought put into serving visitors makes this a great place.

The aquarium is set up into zones. The key zones are the ‘Sea of Japan’ and the ‘Shinano River’ zones. These two zones are important because Niigata city faces the Sea of Japan, and is also where the Shinano River flows into the sea. The exhibits allow you to observe the fish and animals from very close.

The aquarium also replicates the rough waves and terrain of the Sea of Japan. Moss does not grow on rocks here, because of the low tide in winter combined with the ferocious winds and cold weather.

The highlight of this aquarium is the dolphin shows. At set times throughout the day (enquire for the times at the ticket counter or information desk), the dolphins put on a show of acrobatics and intelligence at the large outdoor pool.

There are several ways to make your way to the museum from Niigata station. However, the bus is recommended. Purchasing a one-day bus ticket (¥500) entitles you to a 20% discount on our admission and other special offers. As admission to the aquarium costs ¥1500 for adults, you will be saving ¥300! Another available deal is the ticket book, which offers six tickets for the price of five.
