The most famous ones you’ll find absolutely everywhere are triangle shaped traditional sweets called Yatsuhashi.
Here is a box of Yatsuhashi sweets from the maker Nishio, established in 1689!
Yatsuhashi sweets are basically a flat piece of glutinous rice flour, sugar, and water (usually flavored with cinnamon).
Nama Yatsuhashi, ”fresh Yatsuhashi” in Japanese, is square shaped and is mainly cinnamon flavored filled with red bean paste.
It looks very similar to a dumpling.
The most famous is cinnamon (nikki), but now you can find plenty of new flavors such as matcha green tea, sweet potato, chocolate, strawberry, yuzu, black sesame, and many more!
Since this paste is made with glutinous rice, it feels like eating mochi.
These Japanese Yatsuhashi sweets are recommended to be eaten with a cup of tea.
If you go to Kyoto, don’t forget to taste some Yatsuhashi sweets or bring some for your family and friends!
Which kind of flavor do you want to try?
