Lee’s Travelog – Osaka Kaiyukan Aquarium

Aquarium’s always feature in the list of “top 10” date spots for Japanese couples.

There are a plethora of aquariums in Japan; the most famous is perhaps the Churaumi Aquarium in Okinawa, which features dynamic displays using the world’s second largest glass tank (the largest is in Dubai).
That said, Okinawa is a little far away for term-time travel, so instead I went out to explore Osaka’s Kaiyukan – located in between Osaka’s city-centre and Kansai International Airport.

The aquarium follows a theme-based display route – there are sections devoted to aquatic creatures of Antarctica, the Pacific Ocean, the Ecuadorian rain forest, the deep sea and so on…
There are also some interactive sections where you can touch fish, stingrays and starfish!

A highlight of this aquarium if you visit in winter is the penguin show.
At specified times during the day, which are advertised on notice boards and by staff, a group of penguins will march just outside the aquarium.
If you don’t manage to plan your holiday here in the winter, you can still enjoy the feeding shows inside the museum.
At specified times throughout the day, you can see how the resident penguins, mammals and fish eat food.

Once you’re done with the aquarium, you treat yourself to a ride on the Ferris wheel nearby.
The ride lasts for approximately 12 minutes, and, on a clear day, you will be able to see all of Osaka.
The night views are reputedly even better!
